Gentle Warriors: For Tame Tummy, Big Breaths, Calm and Rest
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a rich history in pediatrics that spans several millennia, with profound contributions from numerous dynasties and renowned physicians, both historical and modern.
In recent years, this ancient wisdom has been adapted to suit modern pediatric needs through innovative products such as Kan Herb Company's pediatric-focused line, Gentle Warriors. The expert formulators for this entire line of formulas (as well as for Sage Solutions and Chinese Modular Solutions) are Harriet Beinfield, LAc, and Effrem Korngold, LAc, OMD. This article touches on the historical roots of pediatric TCM, highlights key formulas, and discusses the adaptation of these principles in contemporary settings, focusing on the Gentle Warriors formulas: Easy Going, Open Air, and Quiet Calm.
Historical Perspectives on Pediatrics in TCM
Pediatrics in TCM emerged as a specialized field during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE), a period noted for significant medical advancements. The Song physician Qian Yi (1032-1113 CE), often considered a founder of pediatric medicine in China, contributed extensively to the understanding and treatment of childhood diseases. By substituting Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia) for Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia), while removing the two hot herbs Rou Gui (Cinnamon Cortex) and Zhi Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Accessory Rhizome), Qian Yi composed the formulation Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six).
Initially employed for the five developmental delays, including “Kidney timidity with loss of voice, non-closure of the anterior fontanel, insufficient spirit... and a shiny pale complexion,” Liu Wei Di Huang Wan “came to be seen as the paradigmatic formula for the treatment of yin deficiency” (1) more broadly, for all ages, genders and sexes.
An intriguing commentary on the use-case of this formula is provided by the Ming dynasty physician Gong Ju Zhong:
The ancients composed Six-Ingredient Pil with Rehmannia (liu wei di huang wan) in order to treat all kinds of phlegm-fire patterns. It is also said that one can take it irrespective of whether one is ill or not yet ill. [To understand this] one must deeply penetrate to the mysteries of disease. How then is this?... When the ancients used tonifying herbs, they always simultaneously drained the pathogenic [qi that is caused by the deficiency]. When these pathogens are removed, the tonifying herbs become [even more] potent. [Being able to] open and close at the same time, this is truly miraculous. Later generations no longer understood this principle. Focusing solely on tonification will, over the long term, cause harm through unilateral dominance. Is the composition of Six-Ingredient Pill not divine?
Tan Yunxian (1461-1554 CE) was a Ming dynasty (1368-1644 CE) physician specializing in gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics. She was the only female physician during this period to produce a medical text (Sayings of a Female Doctor), although because of her sex, was unable to publish it without the help of her son. Tan Yunxian was greatly influential in the realm of gynecology and pediatrics by virtue of her insightful and effective treatments which spanned the reproductive process through childbirth and motherhood.
Kan Herb Company’s Contribution – Between Heaven and Earth
The materia medica of TCM includes several formulas specifically designed for pediatric use. These formulas address common childhood issues such as digestive disorders, respiratory conditions, and emotional disturbances. The principles behind these formulations often emphasize gentleness and balance, reflecting the sensitive nature of the pediatric population.
On this note of gentleness, glycerin is added to the Gentle Warriors line for several purposes. Glycerin is thick and sweet; thus, it helps smooth herb flavors, making them more appealing for children's palates. Glycerin is also a preservative, so its addition to the formulas allows for a lower percentage of alcohol than non-glycerin containing formulas. Because glycerin is not very efficient at extracting the active constituents of herbs, Gentle Warrior extracts are produced in the same way all of our other extracts are made, by cooking the herbs in a proprietary alcohol/water combination. After the extraction process, extra alcohol is evaporated, and glycerin is added for flavor and its preservative qualities.
Easy Going is designed to address common digestive issues in children, such as occasional constipation and food stagnation. It is a modification of the formula Tummy Tamer, enhanced with ingredients like Flax seed (Ya Ma Zi) and Chinese rhubarb (Da Huang) to support healthy bowel movements without harsh stimulation.
In late summer, children might experience digestive disturbances due to dietary changes and heat. Easy Going helps in maintaining regular bowel movements, which is crucial as the season transitions to the cooler weather of early fall.
Open Air caters to the respiratory system, which can be vulnerable in children due to environmental stressors like pollutants and allergens. This formula uses herbs like Perilla fruit (Zi Su Zi) and Apricot seed (Xing Ren) to clear phlegm, soothe the airways, and support lung health.
During early fall, children are exposed to new immune challenges, especially with the start of the school year. Open Air can help manage the seasonal increase in respiratory-based influences, ensuring that the Lung Qi is protected and supported.
Quiet Calm addresses emotional and neurological health in children. It incorporates ingredients known for their calming effects, like Wild Jujube Seed (Suan Zao Ren) and Gastrodia rhizome (Tian Ma), to help manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional disturbances.
The autumnal transition can often trigger stress, and indoor activities can exacerbate tension. Quiet Calm is beneficial in helping children maintain emotional stability during the beginning of colder, shorter days when indoor activities are more frequent.
Additionally, consider titrating the dose for maximizing the formula’s ability to soothe the nervous system. If the child is only mildly anxious or restless, ¼ of a dropperful may suffice. If the emotional dysregulation is pronounced, the dosage can be increased from there. This formula has a spectrum of herbs, and some work quickly, while some work more slowly. In situations where rapid effect is necessary, parents and caregivers can start with the lowest dose and then use more after a few minutes while noting the child’s response—this formula can start working within minutes so the strength of effect should be apparent.
The Gentle Warriors line by Kan Herb Company exemplifies the modern application of ancient TCM principles, specifically tailored to the unique physiological needs of children and youth. These formulas, grounded in centuries-old wisdom but adapted to contemporary health challenges, offer a holistic approach to pediatric care that respects both the complexity and the resilience of young bodies. By understanding and utilizing these time-tested solutions, we can provide effective, natural support for the developmental and health objectives arising within the growth of this population into their fullest selves.
[Personal note added by Kan CEO Greg Pepping: As a Dad to a six year-old boy and a three year-old girl, I'm particularly drawn to and proud of Kan's Gentle Warriors line of formulas. You may have read this from me before: Quiet Calm soothes my intense six-year old on a regular basis, and our three year-old stays regular as we give her daily doses of Easy Going. I'm so thankful that Kan has partnered with Drs. Korngold and Beinfield on these formulations.]
