The primary purpose of Free the Sinews (Yi Yi Ren Tang) is to disperse Dampness with a gentle emphasis on Spleen and Kidney Qi tonification. Chinese cinnamon twig and White peony root release the Tai Yang and expel invading Wind Damp. White peony root supports the actions of Dong quai root in moving Blood. Chinese cinnamon twig boosts peripheral circulation. Pubescent angelica root helps in alleviating back and neck stagnation.

Job’s tears seed has an important dual effect in this formula. The predisposition of the animal to Damp invasion comes from internal Damp accumulation due to faulty Spleen function. Job’s tears seed is used here to leech accumulated Damp out of the body via the urinary tract while providing mild Spleen support; and when used in tandem with warm pungent herbs like Chinese cinnamon twig, it helps expel Wind Damp from the Exterior.

Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome serves to expel Wind Cold Damp from the joints, as well as from the Spleen itself. Lastly, Dong quai root in tandem with White peony root moves the Blood. It also tonifies Blood where it is lacking due to Spleen deficiency. Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies Spleen and Stomach while harmonizing the formula as a whole.
