Thank you for understanding!

According to the ancient texts, when Kidney Qi declines, slowly with normal aging or as a result of stressful living, the strength and resilience of the hair, teeth, skin, muscles and bones also diminishes. On the other hand, lifelong cultivation and conservation of Kidney Qi, enhances our physical powers and resilience as we grow and mature into middle age and our golden years. The Kidney Network is responsible for the capacity to maintain stability, adapt to stress, support body tissues and organs, generate blood and marrow, grow, mature and reproduce. It also forms the body’s structural elements including the bones and teeth, for the Kidney is the source of bone.

The ovaries and testes are an integral part of the hypothalamic-pituitary- adrenal axis (HPA). The biological functions of this neuro-endocrine network regulate metabolism, hematopoiesis, core temperature and pressure, growth and maturation, reproduction and adaptation to stress. The concept of the pituitary-hypothalamic axis has been adopted by many Chinese researchers as a model that is parallel to traditional descriptions of the Kidney Network, and helps to understand manifold functions.

Based upon the experience of contemporary Chinese herbalists, we know that certain herbal formulas can amend patterns of Kidney deficiency and support bone density. Traditional herbal recipes that have been used since ancient times are currently being employed by Chinese herbalists to support and maintain healthy bone mass.

Marrow Matters is based on several formulas that have been documented in Chinese studies. Its objectives are to invigorate the Kidney, replenish Essence, support healthy bones and tendons, fortify Yang and benefit the circulation of Blood.

RATIONALE

Eucommia bark, Eclipta herb, Ligustrum fruit, Achyranthes root, Eleutherococcus root bark, Sichuan teasel root and Drynaria rhizome strengthen the Kidney, tonify Yin and Yang, nourish the tendons and bones and expel Damp Heat and Damp Cold from the Lower Burner. Achyranthes root, Eleutherococcus root bark, Sichuan teasel root and Drynaria rhizome are particularly useful for benefiting the sacrum and lumbar region.

Deer horn gelatin and raw Rehmannia root replenish Essence, benefit Marrow and nourish Blood. In addition, Eleutherococcus root bark supports healthy bones and the True Yang (Zhen Yang) or Life Fire (Ming Huo), while Deer horn gelatin supports the tendons, bones and spine by invigorating the True Yang of the Kidney and Governing Vessel. The combination of Pyrola herb, Cranesbill herb, and Homalomena rhizome appears frequently in formulas for supporting healthy bones and benefiting the skin and muscles. Together they support the bone and tendon, and support the properties of Oyster shell, Achyranthes root, Eleutherococcus root bark, Drynaria rhizome and Sichuan teasel root.

The work of nourishing and supporting is accomplished by herbs that anchor and consolidate. Dragon bone and Oyster shell serve to quell Yang, astringe Essence and secure Life Fire (Ming Huo) at its source in the Life Gate (Ming Men). This action is complemented by the classical pair, Phellodendron bark and Anemarrhena rhizome, which counter an intensification of Internal Heat that may be generated by herbs with a warm or hot nature. These two herbs not only clear Heat, but, along with Dragon bone and Oyster shell, encourage the True Yang of the Life Gate Fire to settle down into the Lower Burner.

Epimedium herb and Curculigo rhizome, especially in combination with Deer horn gelatin, robustly fortify Yang. Epimedium herb and Curculigo rhizome have been shown in modern Chinese herbal research to be valuable agents for nourishing Essence, Marrow and Blood. These two Yang tonics are essential for invigorating the Yang processes of transformation necessary for generating the Yin constituents of bone, muscle and connective tissue. White atractylodes rhizome strengthens the Spleen, the source of post-natal Qi and Essence, and consolidates the surface, thus helping the body retain its resources of Qi and Blood. In combination with Sichuan teasel root, Eucommia bark, Curculigo rhizome and Deer horn gelatin, White atractylodes rhizome also warms and supports the womb, which is an outgrowth of the primordial Chong Mai-Kidney system. In the contemporary literature, herbs like Chinese salvia root and rhizome are salutary botanical agents for supporting optimal capillary circulation. They enhance the other bone and tendon benefitting herbal ingredients found in this formula.
