The stress that can be induced by sudden or rapidly occurring fluctuations in environmental conditions is often a factor in the patterns of External Invasion in individuals who are occasionally challenged by changes in climate and the weather. These patterns may involve an array of functions, including those of the organ networks, channels and vessels of Qi and Blood, and the defensive layers of the skin and muscles.
According to the theories of Chinese traditional herbology, when the Blood and Qi (the Ying and Wei) are insufficient, a person becomes vulnerable to External Influences (Wai Xie).
Enviroshield is composed of herbs whose combined properties focus on supporting and benefitting the body’s barrier boundaries, the exterior protective layers of skin and muscle where the Wei Qi circulates and guards against invasion by External Influences. It is via these protective layers that the pure essences (Gu Qi and Da Qi) are received and metabolic byproducts are eliminated. In the environmentally challenged individual, the body’s protective envelope (the skin and muscle layers) may occasionally become more permeable to External Influences. Enviroshield is composed of the core elements of several classical formulas for dispelling external invasions, especially when there is an underlying pattern of Wei and Ying or Qi and Blood deficiency.
Enviroshield bolsters resistance by tonifying Wei and Ying, Qi and Blood, and evicting External Influences that have penetrated the Wei and Qi defensive layers and affected the Upper and Middle Burners.
RATIONALE
The six classical formulas blended together here − Kudzu Decoction (Ge Gen Tang), Cinnamon Twig Decoction (Gui Zhi Tang), Xanthium Powder (Cang Er Zi San), Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Decoction (Sang Ju Yin), Jade Screen Powder (Yu Ping Fen San) and Pulsatilla Decoction (Bai Tou Weng Tang) − represent varying strategies for dispelling Wind Invasion combined with other external influences such as Dampness, Heat and Damp Heat in the presence of underlying insufficiency of Qi. The combined ingredients address patterns of disharmony that in particular affect the channels, tissues and organ networks governed by the Upper Burner (Shang Jiao) and Middle Burner (Zhong Jiao).
The general properties that can be ascribed to the subgroups of herbs in Enviroshield are as follows: Astragalus root, Kudzu root, White atractylodes rhizome, Chinese licorice root and rhizome and White peony root supplement Qi and Blood. Kudzu root, Siler root, Chrysanthemum flower, White mulberry leaf, Fragrant angelica root and Xanthium fruit all dispel Wind from the body’s surfaces and orifices. Chinese cinnamon twig and Ginger rhizome warm the surface and the interior circulation of Qi and Blood. Platycodon root, licorice cured Pinellia rhizome and White mulberry leaf help to dilute and dispel Phlegm. Pinellia rhizome, especially this licorice cured variety, along with Ginger rhizome, Saussurea root and Coptis rhizome harmonize the Stomach and Intestines by resolving Phlegm, eliminating Dampness, descending Qi, dispelling Cold and clearing Heat.
