The base of Damp Heat Derma Relief (Long Dan Er Miao San) is largely a combination of the classical formulas Subdue Liver Fire (Long Dan Xie Gan Tang) and Er Miao San.
Chinese gentian root and rhizome, Chinese skullcap root and Gardenia fruit clear Heat from the Liver and Heart while drying Damp in the Lower Burner. Bupleurum root and Chinese skullcap root guide the formula to the Triple Burner and Gallbladder channels. Bupleurum root and Dong quai root prevent Qi and Blood stasis. Raw Rehmannia root cools the Blood while protecting and replenishing Yin. Plantain seed, Asian water plantain rhizome and Poria with wood root drain Damp from the Lower Burner and cool the Upper Burner.
Phellodendron bark and Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome constitute Er Miao San. As an herb pair they clear Heat and dry Damp in the Lower Burner, while warming and drying the Middle Burner and strengthening the Spleen. They also protect the Spleen from the strong cooling effects of the formula. Cang-zhu atractylodes rhizome also has Wind-expelling properties. Other Wind-dispersing herbs include White mulberry leaf and Dictamnus root bark. Kochia fruit drains Damp, while Chinese red peony root and Tree peony root bark cool and move Blood. Chinese licorice root and rhizome clears Heat and harmonizes the other herbs in the formula.
