ABOUT THE HERBS
Bupleurum and Kudzu Clearing Formula (Jia Wei Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang) formula consists of cool pungent herbs to disperse Wind from each of the three exterior Yang layers, which are associated with the Shao Yang, Yang Ming and Tai Yang channels. Kudzu root and Notopterygium root and rhizome expel Wind from the Tai Yang, while White peony root regulates the pores in the Tai Yang or Wei layer. Gypsum and Fragrant angelica root expel invasions from the Qi layer and the Yang Ming channels, while Chinese skullcap root has an added cooling effect on the Upper Burner. Bupleurum root is the lone herb to push invasions of the Shao Yang layer all the way back out to the body periphery. Platycodon root directs the formula to the Upper Burner, as does Chinese skullcap root. Chinese licorice root and rhizome tonifies the Stomach Qi, as well as harmonizes the herbs for better synergy. Ginger rhizome and Red jujube fruit also promote digestion of the formula, but assist in a minor way with the main thrust of the formula, which is to release the invasion, and build up Blood and Nutritive Qi to resist further entry.
Because of the use of Chinese skullcap root, Platycodon root, and even Notopterygium root and rhizome, the thrust of the formula as originally designed, was to expel Wind invasion of the Upper Burner. With the addition of Pubescent angelica root, the formula extends its Wind- expelling effect to the low back and Lower Burner. Another difference from the original formula is the use of increased amounts of Bupleurum root, Notopterygium root and rhizome and White peony root to enhance its Wind-expelling effect and to relieve stagnation.
